Guard smashed over head with brick during Middleton robbery

Date published: 19 March 2009

A security guard was hit on the head with a brick by robbers as he delivered cash in Middleton.

At about 6am this morning (Thursday 19 March), the guard was delivering cash to ATMs at Tesco on Kirkway when three masked men ran up to him.

One of the robbers hit him over the head with a brick, took four cash boxes and the men ran off.

They escaped with a substantial amount of cash.

The security guard was not injured as he was wearing his helmet.

All three robbers were wearing balaclavas.

One of the offenders was dressed in a grey jumper and grey tracksuit bottoms, another was dressed all in black and the victim was unable to see the third man.

The cash boxes they took were grey with distinctive green handles.

Detective Constable Claire Ramsden, of Rochdale CID, said: "These men thought nothing of using violence against the security guard and nobody should have to face that while just doing their job.

"It was fortunate he was wearing his helmet otherwise he could have been seriously injured.

"The robbers took a large sum of money and I am hoping the containers may come to somebody's attention as they are quite distinctive looking.

"It is also possible they used a car to get away after they ran off and I would urge anyone who saw anything they think might help catch these men to get in touch."

Anyone with information is asked to call Rochdale CID on 0161 856 8951 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
