Young and old share community spirit

Hundreds of people have come together to enjoy a fun-filled day of activities, demonstrations and exercise at a Community Fun Day in Rochdale this week.

The event was held by Rochdale Borough Council on Saturday (14 March) at Castlemere Community Centre, to encourage local people, of all ages, to join together and share in common interests, as well as trying some new ones.

More than 600 people turned out to the event to take part in an array of classes, including aerobics and arts and crafts. There was Henna painting available and even Indian head massages for those in need of some pampering. There was also a Wii tournament which attracted lots of interest from all ages.

There were health checks available from NHS volunteers and diet advice and cooking demonstrations from Weight Watchers representatives. The council’s partners, The Impact Partnership held workshops around road safety and Link4Life gave out free swimming passes.

Councillor Pauline Maguire, cabinet member for Older People, Rochdale Borough Council was delighted with the turn out and atmosphere of the day. She said;

“It was fantastic to see so many people attend the event; the numbers really took us by surprise! It was a great day with people of all ages interacting with each other, having fun and sharing common interests.

“The day helped to promote respect and understanding across the generations and it was wonderful to see young and old come together and enjoy themselves.”

Visitors also got to tuck into some free food and then got the opportunity to burn it off by trying out the new Easy Line Gym Equipment on display in the centre.
