Thousands raised for Gaza

Date published: 19 March 2009

An astonishing £33,000 was raised during a charity fundraising dinner to help the victims in Gaza.

Organised by Islamic Relief and Rochdale-based Deen For All and was held at Karim’s Restaurant in Middleton.

Chris Davies, North West MEP described the £33,000 raised as an "astonishing and tremendous result."

He said: "I have seen for myself the scale of the destruction, and I can vouch that this money is hugely needed to assist the victims of an illegal act of collective punishment by Israel.

"The generosity of the donors also sends a powerful message to politicians everywhere. People are very, very angry about the continuing injustice in the Middle East, with Israel able to crush Palestinians without opposition.

"The immediate task is to lift the blockade of Gaza that denies 1.5 million people access to basic goods. It is time that EU leaders said to Israel, 'you have gone too far, enough is enough.'"

Money was raised through ticket sales, raffle and auction.
