People’s Art is Back at Touchstones

Date published: 08 October 2007

The ever popular annual open art exhibition is now open for the public to view in Galleries One and Two at Touchstones Rochdale. The Mayor, Councillor Peter Evans, officially opened the exhibition on Saturday lunchtime.

After the success of the exhibition in 2006, People’s Art returns with another stunning display of work by people who live or work in areas across the borough including Rochdale, Middleton, Heywood and Littleborough.

The exceptional talent of local people has again been brought to the fore, with 190 paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings and craft objects on display. All entries submitted have been found a space truly giving local people the chance to exhibit in their local art gallery.

Visitors to the exhibition can vote for their favourite artwork in the ‘People’s Choice’ award. The artist with the most votes at the end of the exhibition will be awarded a selection of art materials.

There are also a whole host of hands-on activities for younger visitors to have a go at within the exhibition. Known as the Art Paddock, the space is full of creative activities based around colour, shape and pattern. No need to book – just turn up.

On Saturday 13 October there is also the opportunity for visitors of all ages to come along and have a go at drawing as part of a national initiative ‘The Big Draw’ which aims to get more people drawing. Along with the drawing activities in the Art Paddock, you can have a go at drawing with a variety of materials including the traditional and the more alternative. You don’t have to think you can draw to have a go! The event will run from 11am – 1pm and 2 - 4pm and is totally free.
