Happy 100th birthday Cissie Peel
Date published: 15 October 2007
Mona Cliffe Residential Home (Littleborough) resident Cissie Peel celebrated her 100th birthday in the company of the Mayor and Mayoress and Paul Rowen MP, along with her niece
Born in 1907, Cissie Peel grew up to leave school and work part time in the Card room at Shaw Mill at the same time continuing part time education. At 14 she left school and took up full time employment at the mill where conditions were poor. There she met her husband Vincent. After his death, she lived with her niece until moving into residential care. Mrs Linda Belshaw, Manager at Mona Cliffe Residential Home said: “Cissie has been here for four years and ever since the first day she arrived she said she was going to get a telegraph off the queen; she was always determined to get one.
"She is partially blind which was a great shame because she couldn’t see everything that was going on, she couldn’t see all the decorations and we had over a hundred people, and the Mayor and MPs here for a long time. It was the best party ever thrown."
Elaine Davies, Senior Carer on night shift said: "Cissie is a lovely lady, despite her sight disability, she has retained her sense of humour, she wears her years extremely well and is a great pleasure to look after."
The Mayor, Councillor Peter Evans said: “It was a lovely day, and it was wonderful to greet a lady that is totally aware about what going on and she enjoyed herself which was the important thing and I was delighted to see the warmth and kindness within everybody around her. The staff and residents made a great effort and made it a successful day, the food and cuisine was very impressive.”
