Police in Heywood warn shoppers

Date published: 12 December 2008

Police in Heywood are warning shoppers to keep their purses and handbags safe during the holiday season.

Pickpocketting increases at this time of year because the streets are busier with Christmas shoppers. Officers are reminding people to be cautious and not to give thieves the opportunity to pinch a present.

Heywood’s Neighbourhood Policing Team reports that most thefts occur when shoppers leave their bags unattended in a shopping trolley or over their shoulder but open.

Inspector Darrell Butterworth of the Heywood Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “Shoppers can reduce the chances of having valuables stolen by following some simple safety tips. These include carrying handbags with you at all times and having the strap over your body rather than over the shoulder to ensure it is kept safe.

“It is also a good idea to keep your purse out of sight in an inside buttoned pocket or to use a body belt.

“Don’t be a victim, while using the cash machine always keep your pin safe and put your money away as soon as you have taken it out of the machine. Always keep your PIN number away from your card and if possible try to remember the number instead of writing it down.

“Christmas shopping can be a really enjoyable time and we want everyone to have a happy, safe experience.”
