Councillor Hobhouse calls for answers on recycling

Date published: 23 October 2007

Cabinet Member for the Environment and Parliamentary Candidate for Heywood and Middleton, Wera Hobhouse has criticised recent comments that have been made in the local media by Labour councillors as misleading.  Councillor Hobhouse was referring to comments made by Councillor Susan Emmott who Councillor Hobhouse  says: "recently claimed to have received over a thousand complaints" about alternative weekly collections. Councillor Hobhouse says: "On investigation it appears that she only reported two complaints".

Councillor Hobhouse added: "Councillor Emmott claims to have received a thousand complaints about the Council's bin service but could never show the evidence. I have now written an open letter to her asking her to apologise for either lying about the number of people who have complained or apologise for a clear dereliction of her duties as a Councillor by failing to report these complaints.  One of the jobs as a Councillor is to deal with complaints by informing this Council.  She clearly hasn't and should apologise for her scare-mongering.

"Unfortunately, adding to this confusion over our bin service was Township Chair Councillor Peter Williams. He completely mislead the public over a government report on recycling and refused to even give an answer at full Council meeting last week when being challenged about his information.

"Another Labour lie over the last few weeks, that I feel I must point out, is Labour's incorrect figures over our Council Tax collection record. They claim that we have one of the worst collection rates in the country which is simply untrue.

"It would be refreshing to see Labour admit to some of their false claims, incorrect figures and misleading information."
