The High Sheriff of Greater Manchester, Eamonn O’Neal OBE, paid a visit to Rochdale’s Army of Kindness Hot Food Kitchen last week, where he met the volunteers who dedicate their time each week to supporting local families and individuals in need.
The visit offered an opportunity for the High Sheriff to engage with both volunteers and clients, including children and families, to hear their stories and learn more about the impact of the service.
He commended the volunteers, whose diverse backgrounds and ages reflect a shared commitment to helping others.
During the evening, attendees enjoyed a warm meal, sandwiches, tea, coffee, and biscuits. Families in need also received essential toiletries and food supplies, such as bread, milk, and cereal. Additionally, a free barbering service provided haircuts to those seeking support.
John Shaw, named Rochdale’s ‘Man of the Year’, was recognised for his generous contributions of food and toiletries, which were vital in supporting families attending the event.
The evening included a heartwarming celebration for long-serving volunteer Denise Chadwick, whose birthday was marked with a surprise cake and warm wishes from clients and fellow volunteers.
The High Sheriff expressed his admiration for the work being done by the Army of Kindness volunteers, praising their dedication to serving the community. He said: “It is incredible to see people from such diverse backgrounds and age groups united by their commitment to serving humanity.”
