Independents claim victory in North Middleton by-election

Date published: 01 November 2024

The Middleton Independent Party clinched victory in the North Middleton by-election.

The newly-elected Councillor Keeley O’Mara took 52 per cent of the vote, taking the number of MIP council members back to two.

The MIP said it was ‘thrilled’ to take the seat vacated by independent Peter Allonby.

The battle was realistically only going to be between two parties – Labour and the MIP. Despite strong campaigning from Labour, who still control Rochdale Council with an overwhelming majority, the Middleton Independents were victorious.

Labour’s Donna Martin was the runner up with 572 votes (36 per cent), followed by Conservative Sajid Majid with 108 votes; and Iain Donaldson of the Lib Dems with 80 votes.

MIP chair Lee Wolf said: “We’re thrilled to share that Keeley has been elected as the new councillor for North Middleton; a fantastic outcome for both her and the residents she’ll represent.

“North Middleton now has a councillor in Keeley who will be a dedicated and passionate advocate for both the ward and the broader community. Starting her duties today, Keeley is ready to hit the ground running.

“In her role as councillor, Keeley will serve with dedication and integrity, free from the influence of vested interests or directives from national party leaders, she’s here solely to represent you.

“Keeley believes in local decision-making by local people, unpressured by those pushing for unnecessary projects. It’s time that the voices of those who live and understand the local issues drive decisions, challenging the idea that any one party holds ownership over our town’s future.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the residents of North Middleton for trusting Keeley with this responsibility.

“We would also like to express our sincere thanks to former councillor Peter Allonby. Peter has been an outstanding representative for the ward, always stepping up to address the community’s needs, even during challenging times with his health.

"Peter’s dedication to North Middleton is deeply appreciated.

“Our thanks also go out to Keeley’s opponents in this election; we wish them all the best for the future. Finally, we’re grateful to the election officials and the teams at Middleton Arena for their hard work last night, ensuring that every vote was counted and the results delivered promptly.”
