Strawberry Sparkle: GEM Appeal's most successful year

Date published: 03 September 2024

The GEM Appeal’s annual Strawberry Sparkle was a dazzling success, raising £5,000 for the cause.

The event, held at Rochdale Golf Club on 21 August, was said to be the most successful year yet. Over 150 ladies were dressed to impress, gathering for an afternoon brimming with elegance and generosity.

Attendees were greeted with a refreshing Strawberry Sparkle cocktail, expertly crafted by Steve Flett and his team at Rochdale Golf Club.

The afternoon started with the opportunity to browse unique offerings from Jo’s Handmade Crafts, Amanda’s Tropic Treats and Nadia jewellery stalls.

Following the shopping experience, guests enjoyed a lunch prepared by The Food from Scratch Group. Entertainment was provided by the popular James Cockerill, who kept the atmosphere lively and engaging.

The fundraising efforts were further boosted by a series of raffles and an exciting auction, contributing significantly to the total amount raised.

The GEM Appeal expressed heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended and supported the event, which continues to be a highlight in Rochdale’s social calendar.

Wendy Mills, GEM Appeal trustee said: “Such a fantastic afternoon.  The atmosphere was amazing. Ladies of all ages, coming together to raise our best ever Strawberry Sparkle total of £5,000.

“We are so grateful for all the beautiful floral  decorations, donated by local florists and supermarkets, and totally overwhelmed by the support of everyone involved in making the event such a success.”

It is The Gem Appeal's 30th anniversary this year. Money raised recently is funding a research scientist at the Willink Unit at Manchester Children's Hospital.

The laboratory at the Unit is named after Karen Johnson's two boys, Simon and Mikey, who died from Hunter Syndrome, one of the rare genetic conditions that the GEM Appeal raises money for to fund research.

The scientist is making progress and the aim is to raise more money for her valuable work to continue. Pioneering research at the unit has resulted in lifesaving treatments being developed.

The GEM Appeal would like to raise as much as possible towards this in this special year.
