Report uncovers critical gaps in menopause support for Rochdale residents

Date published: 21 July 2024

A recent report has highlighted significant gaps in the information and support available to residents of Rochdale experiencing menopause. Conducted by Healthwatch Rochdale, the study revealed that many local people, particularly those from ethnic minority communities, face challenges in accessing adequate resources and understanding related to menopause and perimenopause.

Key findings of the report include:

  • A prevalent lack of information, support, and awareness about menopause.
  • Many individuals were unaware of the full range of menopause symptoms, often attributing them to other health issues.
  • Menopause significantly impacted various aspects of life, including family dynamics, intimate relationships, work, and mental health.
  • Health professionals often lacked knowledge about menopause and hormone replacement therapy (HRT), leading to the provision of generic rather than personalised information.

In response to these insights, Healthwatch Rochdale has put forward six recommendations to the Integrated Health and Social Care System in Rochdale and the Greater Manchester Integrated Care System. These recommendations aim to enhance the support and awareness for those undergoing menopause.

Kate Jones, chief executive officer of Healthwatch Rochdale, said: “Now we have engaged with all pockets of the Rochdale community, and received a constant message from our residents, Healthwatch Rochdale are keen to monitor the responses to our recommendations to ensure women across the borough receive the right awareness, information, and support when going through perimenopause/menopause.”
