New investment sparks "cultural and economic growth"

Date published: 09 August 2024

Rochdale is undergoing a "revival" with strategic investments revitalising the town.

This year saw the grand reopening of Rochdale Town Hall after a £20 million refurbishment, showcasing the borough's dedication to heritage and growth.

Leading the way in industrial innovation, Rochdale spearheads projects like Atom Valley and CEAMS, cementing its position as a hub for technological advancements.

Despite the pandemic's lasting impact on the hospitality sector, Rochdale's other industries are bouncing back faster.

To boost the local cultural scene, Rochdale Development Agency (RDA) secured £69,262 from Arts Council England to create a Culture and Placemaking team.

This team aims to integrate the arts into broader investment plans, craft a vibrant event calendar, and transform Rochdale into a desirable place to live, visit, and work. It will support local artists, offering business support, training, and career pathways, thus nurturing home-grown talent.

Councillor Sue Smith said: "This initiative is about future-proofing our creative sector, ensuring a skills pipeline, and creating career pathways to retain talent within the borough."

Rochdale's signature event, the Feel Good Festival, will expand to a three-day celebration this year, featuring local and national talent.

Highlights include Ocean Colour Scene headlining on August 10th and a grassroots Feelgood Fringe Festival. The expanded festival is expected to attract 8,000 visitors and boost local spending by £650,000.

Sound Roots, a local music organisation, will partner with the RDA to enhance music education and career opportunities, diversifying the local music scene and raising Rochdale's music profile.

Upcoming projects include a creative collaboration with Sound Roots and Sean Cooney, focusing on Sam Bamford and the Peterloo Massacre, culminating in an album release in Spring 2025.

Rochdale’s proactive support for the music and creative sectors promises a sustainable boost to the borough’s economy and cultural presence in the town and beyond.
