Woman had her hand run over in St Mary’s Gate collision

A woman was injured in a collision on St Mary’s Gate this morning (Friday 31 May).

Police attended the scene and closed off the road for approximately 45 minutes, and concluded that her injuries were not serious or life threatening - but it is believed she had her hand run over.

Ambulance services were not called to the scene, and the woman was taken to hospital by police to assess her hand.

A spokesperson from Greater Manchester Police confirmed that officers attended St Mary’s Gate at approximately 10.15am this morning, and the road was reopened again by 11.00am.

St Mary’s Gate, close to Rochdale town centre, is one of the locations identified for a zebra crossing to be built in a bid to make it safer.

The new crossing on St Mary’s Gate will connect the businesses close to Howard Place, the current entrance point to the Reed Hill car park, and Redcross Street, close to the Lidl store.

The changes will make it easier and safer for pedestrians to cross the busy road and better connect the town centre to its surrounding areas, as well as Rochdale Infirmary.

In addition to the new crossing, the council is looking to improve vehicle access to the Reed Hill car park, by removing the current access from St Mary’s Gate via Howard Place and creating a new access point from Hunter’s Lane.
