Cardinal Langley RC High School shortlisted for Educate Award

Date published: 17 October 2023

Cardinal Langley RC High School in Middleton has been named in the Educate Awards shortlist.

For over a decade, the Educate Awards have shone a spotlight on the education sector, showcasing the work of schools and colleges that are continually delivering an outstanding education and supporting young people to reach their full potential.

With a total of 20 categories, the shortlist recognises inspiring teachers, dedicated support staff, and strategic leadership teams.

Cardinal Langley has been shortlisted for the Leadership Team of the Year Award and is one of six Greater Manchester schools nominated across all categories.

The nomination says the leadership team at Cardinal Langley RC High School makes a “significant impact on the lives of young people both within the school and across the education system,” adding “as a school judged Outstanding by the Diocese of Salford and Good by Ofsted, there is an extensive amount of experience that has been shared” whilst capacity has been developed “to support other schools on their improvement journey. “

The school’s headteacher, Andrew Bridson, is also the chief executive of the Rochdale Pioneers Trust partnership of all secondary schools and post-16 colleges in the borough. The group developed a post-pandemic recovery plan for education and to support all young people to achieve their potential.

The strategic plan, developed in partnership with all schools, focused on a commitment to ‘Raising Rochdale’. This is a plan which has now been replicated across a wide range of services in the borough to improve the life chances of all young people.

Additionally, the school has also supported the local community, donating 728 advent calendars and 520 Easter eggs to the local foodbank, as well as providing nearly 100 Christmas hampers for elderly residents and raising £2,000 for Caritas. This year the school used its annual sponsored walk to raise £2,000 for the Good Life Orphanage charity in Kenya; it is planned for a group of staff from Cardinal Langley to volunteer.

This year, Cardinal Langley has won a number of curriculum awards, including the Geography Quality Mark (Gold), History Quality Mark (Silver) and the PE & Sport Gold Award.

Mr Bridson said: “Cardinal Langley RC High School is proud to have been nominated for ‘Leadership Team of the Year’ at the prestigious Educate Awards 2023.

“Over the last five years we have been recognised at the awards for our ‘Inspirational Sixth Form Provision’, ‘Contribution to Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths’, ‘Provision for Special Needs Children’ and last year a member of staff won the ‘Support Star of the Year’ award.

“None of this would have been possible without a dedicated leadership team and I am delighted that this has been recognised this year.”

Kim O’Brien, founder of the Educate Awards, said: “A massive congratulations to the Manchester schools and colleges that have made this year’s shortlist.

“This year we received a record number of entries which made the judges’ job tougher than ever before. It is no mean feat making it this far and so every school and college on the shortlist should be extremely proud.”

Kim added: “Plans are well underway to make the Educate Awards 2023 ceremony another standout event in the education calendar.

“Together with our incredible sponsors, we look forward to celebrating the achievements of schools, colleges, and individuals with an evening filled with glitz and glamour.”

The awards, in partnership with ASL and Ricoh, are the largest education awards in the region and will return to the iconic Liverpool Cathedral on Friday 17 November.
