The family fun day launch of the Russell Foundation
The launch of the Russell Foundation – in memory of 17-year-old Callum ‘Russell’ Riley – at Darnhill Parade in Heywood on Sunday (28 May) was a huge success, with over £800 raised for the foundation.
Callum was found with serious injuries on Atholl Drive last year, and sadly died on 17 September.
Although arrests were made at the time, no-one has yet been charged in connection with his death.
The Russell Foundation aims to campaign against carrying knives, and hold youth events on Darnhill to reach as many young people as possible.
Hundreds of people from across the borough came to Darnhill for the launch, had fun, and spent generously.
The new mayor – Mike Holly – gave a moving speech with his first visit to Darnhill about the bravery and courage shown by Callum’s mum, Tracy Marsland, in turning heartbreak into something positive for the community.
The most popular attraction on the day was ‘Soak the Parent’ where people queued up to throw wet sponges at their parents, partners and even some local councillors.
There was a remembrance wall with photos of Callum throughout his short life where friends and family could reflect and remember, and the foundation has created multicoloured wrist bands which say "No knives! Save Lives!"
People of all ages also attempted to learn how to juggle and ride a unicycle – with varying degrees of success.
Councillor Angela Brown said: “The feeling of community spirit I felt was unlike anything I've ever experienced before. It was truly special.”
A long list of local businesses donated raffles prizes or held stalls at the event, including: Darnhill Library, Darnhill Community Café; Michelle's Munchies & Gifts; The Dyson Doctor; Adele Butterworth - Brighter Smile; Devine Aesthetics; Go4Raww; KP Garden; Jackie Ye Olde Bubbles; Amelia Rose Craft and Bows; M24 Arts; Locks Barbers; York Street Barbers; Morrisons; The Card Factory; Christopher Hickey Magic; Catering For All Kinds; Granelli’s of Heywood.
The funds raised will be going towards holding additional youth events on Darnhill, to reach as many kids as possible and campaign against carrying knives.
The board of the Russell Foundation – Callum's mum Tracy, Ella Yates (Callum's sister-in-law), Aaran Wade-Young (Callum's friend), Sarah and Nikki Blackshaw (family friends) – will be meeting with youth services, Councillor Angela Brown and Councillor Bev Place soon to plan their next steps.
The next fundraiser for the Russell Foundation is planned for 10 June at Middleton Arena in the form of a charity boxing match.
