Serious road accident leaves young child with life-threatening injuries

A young child has been left with life-threatening injuries after a collision on York Street in Heywood on Friday night (10 February).

Officers were called to the scene at 7.45pm, to reports of a young child, a pedestrian, being hit by a vehicle near to the junction with Hartley Street.

The North West Ambulance Service was also on scene to assess the child, who was subsequently taken to hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries. The road was closed for several hours whilst investigations were carried out, before being reopened.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving whilst the investigation into the collision continues.

GMP are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who may have CCTV/dashcam footage in the area around the time of the accident, to contact the Serious Collision (SCIU) Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741, quoting log number 003102-10022023.
