Opticians put safety in the frame

Date published: 04 February 2023

An opticians in Rochdale is helping to ensure children in the local community shine bright this winter by donating high visibility vests.

Specsavers Rochdale on Yorkshire Street donated 50 vests each to St Andrew’s C of E Primary School and Rochdale 21st (St Andrew’s/Dearnley) Brownie Unit to make sure children are clearly visible and can easily be spotted by motorists, when their activities take them out into the community.

Specsavers Rochdale store director, Sarah Culshaw said: "As the darker nights draw in, we wanted to do something to improve the safety of children in our community.

"We know that outdoor activities are a key part of both the school curriculum and Brownie adventures, so we hope that the fluorescent vests will help the children to be clearly visible to all road users.

"Many of our customers and staff have close connections with the school and Brownies, so we were keen to offer our support to help keep children safe when they’re outdoors."

St Andrew’s C of E Primary School Head Teacher, Mrs Rainford added: "We’re so grateful for the donation; we often take children on trips in the local area and it is very important that they are easily recognisable and highly visible to staff as well as road users. We will put them to good use over the coming months."

Sarah Lemon, leader of the Rochdale 21st (St Andrew’s/Dearnley) Brownie Unit, commented: "We’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to Specsavers. So many of our activities are based outdoors and the vests will mean the girls can continue to complete tasks, whilst being highly visible."
