24/7 support service for victims of rape launched

Date published: 15 January 2023

Victims of rape now have access to round-the-clock support with the launch of a new 24/7 Support Line.

Launched last month, specialist operators – available via telephone or webchat – will be on hand at any time to provide victims with vital information and emotional support.

This includes signposting to local, longer-term services such as Independent Sexual Violence Advisors (ISVA).

The government-funded service will be operated by Rape Crisis England & Wales who have over three decades’ experience running a helpline for rape and sexual abuse survivors.

It will be available to anyone aged 16 years and over who has experienced any form of sexual violence and abuse, at any point in their life. Under 16s who access the support line will be listened to and guided towards appropriate alternative services.

At least 1 in 4 women and 1 in 20 men have been raped or sexually assaulted as an adult.

Research shows that victims who speak to an ISVA are 49% less likely to withdraw from the criminal justice process. This means that the more support a survivor receives, the more likely it is their attacker will be brought to justice.

Jayne Butler, CEO of Rape Crisis England and Wales: “We are proud to have developed and now be launching the 24/7 Rape & Sexual Abuse Support Line, an important addition to the specialist support available for anyone 16 and over in England and Wales who has been impacted by sexual violence and abuse.

“No matter when or where it happened - we are here for you. If you contact us we will always listen to you and believe you, and we will never judge.”

The helpline has been welcomed by Rochdale MP Sir Tony Lloyd. He said: “It's vital that survivors of rape or sexual abuse are listened to, believed and supported to make their own choices about what they would like to do next.

"The launch of this helpline means that access to help at any time of the day or night means no one will be left without somewhere to turn.

“Rape convictions were up by two thirds in 2021 compared to the year before, and custodial sentences for this crime have increased by nearly two years in the latest year. Progress is being made and by having this support line in place, this will help ensure there is easy access to support."

The 24/7 Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Line is available via telephone on: 0808 500 2222 and online at: 247sexualabusesupport.org.uk.
