Local comedy nights help plant 40 new trees in the borough

Date published: 29 November 2022

The people of the Rochdale borough have helped raise enough money for 40 new trees to be planted in the borough, thanks to local comedy nights.

Earlier this year local events promoter Ace Lips came up with the unique idea to donate a tree to offset the environmental impact of bringing comedians to Rochdale.

Trees can offset the CO2 emitted by vehicles by converting carbon dioxide to sugar and oxygen through photosynthesis.

Now with over 700 people enjoying live comedy on their doorsteps, 40 new trees will be planted in a park – to be determined – in the borough.

Rick Attwood, founder of Ace Lips, said: "I was hoping our comedy shows would allow me to be able to plant 10 new trees to offset the carbon footprint of comedians travelling to my shows. This year over 48 comedians have appeared live at a number of venues in the Rochdale borough for Ace Lips Comedy, helping to raise money and awareness for causes including Maximus UK and Little 'Pink' Borough.

"Working with the council, we are looking at various sites in the borough to plant 40 new young trees by February 2023. To be able to swap laughs into trees is an idea I had after reading about the distance some comedians travel for shows, to be able to smash my expectations of 10 trees into 40 is fantastic and I must thank the Environmental Management services of RMBC for helping with my idea."

Ace Lips has been running comedy night for almost 10 years across Rochdale and Oldham, and hosts regular sell-out events at the Old Court Room above the Flying Horse Hotel.

The next comedy night will take place on 24 February with further events to be announced.
