Date published: 30 October 2022

The annual Azad Kashmir Day was celebrated in Rochdale on 24 October at Number One Riverside.

The celebrations started off with flag raising ceremony outside number one Riverside attended by the Mayor of Rochdale, MP Sir Tony Lloyd and local councillors and members of the community.

Azad Kashmir Day marks the date Azad Kashmir was established, 24 October 1947.

The flag raising was followed by an event to raise funds for the mayor's charities which was hosted at kashmir youth project Rochdale.

The evening comprised of Pahari poetry by Nabeela from Bradford, speeches and a presentation of the Rochdale walk to Pakistan video which is raising money for the people affected by the devastating floods in Pakistan.

A total of £1,000 was raised for the charities as a result of donations, sponsorship and money raised from the raffle on the evening.

Javed Akhtar, chair of Rochdale Kashmir Association, said: “It was wonderful to celebrate Kashmir day with all our communities in Rochdale and to host one of the mayor's charity events at the Kashmiri centre, here in Rochdale.

“The event was a success and enjoyed by everyone who attended.”
