Services of commemoration for late Queen Elizabeth II

Date published: 15 September 2022

Church services in remembrance of the Queen will be taking place across the Rochdale borough on Sunday (18 September).

Services to remember Her Majesty will take place at parish churches across the borough on the evening before the late Queen’s state funeral.

The Mayor, Councillor Ali Ahmed, and other local dignitaries will attend St Chad’s to pay their respects to Her Majesty at the borough's civic service.

The St Chad’s service will begin at 6.30pm and is open to the public to attend. Anyone wishing to attend should arrive no later than 6.15pm. The choral service will be led by the Bishop, Rt Rev Mark Davies.

The civic service will include the national minute’s silence, which is being observed at 8pm.

People attending are being asked to wear suitable clothing that reflects the mood of the occasion and the national mourning period. The dress code for the service is a dark lounge suit, dress or jacket and trousers.

St Chad’s Parish Church was visited by the Queen in 1994 who attended a service to celebrate the church’s 800th anniversary.

  • St Luke’s Church, Heywood, starting at 6pm.
  • Holy Trinity Church, Church Street, Littleborough, starting at 6pm.
  • St Leonard’s Parish Church, Middleton, starting at 6pm.

There will also be a service hosted by St Paul's Church at Norden Jubilee Park this Sunday at 6.30pm for people wishing to remember and give thanks for the life and service of Her Majesty. This service will last 30 minutes.

The National Moment of Reflection will take place at 8pm on Sunday 18 September, the night before the Queen's state funeral, and be marked by a one-minute silence.

The silence can be marked privately at home, with friends and family, out on doorsteps or the street with neighbours, or at locally arranged community events and vigils.

Community groups, clubs and other organisations across the country are encouraged to take part and people overseas are also encouraged to observe the one-minute silence at 8pm local time.
