Heywood running coach laces up trainers for 10 marathons in 10 days

Date published: 12 September 2022

A Heywood running coach who ran laps of her garden in 24-hours during lockdown is tackling a new challenge: 10 marathons in 10 days.

Samantha Morris, 49, will be one of just 22 people – and one of three women – taking on the 10-marathon challenge next year in aid of the Brathay Trust, a youth charity based in Cumbria.

Samantha needs to raise around £3,000 for the charity, but will be footing the £900 entry fee herself. The entry fee covers the race costs, plus accommodation, food, and access to sports therapists.

In 2020, Samantha, who has taken part in over 50 marathons, ran the equivalent of three marathons in 24 hours in her own garden, during lockdown, raising over £600 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

The 10 in 10 challenge sees participants complete the Windermere Marathon route ten times in May, with the final 26.2-mile distance coinciding with the Windermere Marathon event with participants from all over.

To train for the run, Samantha will be doing her own 10-day challenges in the months leading up: 15km/day in September, 20km/day in October, 25/km a day in November – with December being an easier 5km/day.

She will then pick her training back up before the April taper ahead of the event.

Samantha said: “Doing 10 marathons in 10 days has always been on my bucket list and what a way to celebrate my 50th year of life.

“I will be training hard as well as making sure I am the healthiest version of me in the lead up to next year’s event.

“This is my biggest running challenge ever. I would love to raise the biggest amount of money ever to support this amazing charity.

“If any businesses want to sponsor me, I’d be happy to promote you!”

Brathay is a not-for-profit wellbeing and self-development organisation with the charitable purpose of improving the life chances of thousands of young people across Yorkshire and Cumbria, and the North West in real need every year.
