Rochdale AFC Community Trust holds Iftar at Crown Oil Arena

Date published: 29 April 2022

Over 100 people were recently welcomed to a community Iftar at the Crown Oil Arena by Rochdale AFC Community Trust.

The Iftar on 19 April is the first time an event of this kind has been hosted at the football club.

Iftar (opening of the fast) regularly takes place in homes, community centres, and mosques, throughout the holy month of Ramadan. The Iftar is normally observed by Muslims, but the Community Trust was keen to involve all Rochdale communities.

Health and inclusion coordinator, Charlotte Griffiths, worked closely with Nadeem Mir, CEO of Rochdale Council of Mosques, and Imam Irfan Chishti MBE, founder of Me & You Education, to ensure the event was one to be remembered by all.

Ryan Bradley, community director, said: “Following the success of the English Football League Trust funded Communities United programme last year, we are working to engage with the diverse community of Rochdale, and the Iftar event is a fantastic part of that ongoing work.”

Charlotte added: “It was an incredible evening, and an incredible honour to have been trusted by Rochdale Council of Mosques to host the event.

“We received so much positive feedback on the evening, and since the event, and it’s brought with it the prospect of some really important partnership work with the local mosques and other organisations, to extend our reach further and really embed the club as part of the local community.”
