Sheila Hancock chats to three students from St Luke’s CE Primary School in Heywood
Year 6 pupils at St Luke’s CE Primary School in Heywood recently caught up with celebrated actress and author Sheila Hancock, who opened an extension to the school earlier this year.
Using the educational app, DigiSmart, Sheila spoke to three children about coronavirus, and the challenges they feel they have faced by having to self-isolate and learn from home.
Speaking to the children on Thursday (3 December), Sheila said: “You’re doing really well. Really well. Your Head Mistress says you’ve been behaving amazingly, all of you. So congratulations for dealing with it.”
Sheila shared her experiences during World War Two: “We used to have gas mask practice. And when you were very little the gas masks had funny little ears on to pretend that they were Mickey Mouse things, and I hated it.”
She added: “And now, children are having to wear masks again. Isn’t that awful!”

In February, Sheila cut the ribbon for a £1.2 million extension at St Luke's, capable of providing an additional 30 places to each year group at a ceremony attended by the mayor and mayoress.
Sheila visited St. Luke’s over two days in her capacity as patron of DigiSmart educational apps for children, spending time with children taking part in the DigiSmart literacy project, and talking to teaching staff and parents.
