Over 37,400 local jobs supported by government

Date published: 25 August 2020

The wages of 37,400 jobs in the borough of Rochdale have been supported by the government since the launch of the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) and Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS), as of 31 July.

The CJRS (also known as the furlough scheme) and SEISS were announced by the Chancellor, and are run by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), as part of a package of support measures for businesses affected by the coronavirus outbreak.

Businesses in the Rochdale borough have furloughed 29,200 jobs, up to 31 July, since the CJRS was launched on 20 April 2020. This is up from 23,800 jobs up to 31 May 2020. This CJRS data is based on the location of employers, usually their payroll department or headquarters, which may not be in the same region as the furloughed employee lives.

The furlough scheme will run until the end of October to continue the support for jobs and businesses as people return to work. Employers have had the flexibility to bring furloughed employees back to work on a part time basis since 1 July and the government grant provided through the CJRS is being tapered off between August and October.

The SEISS was rolled out in May and has supported 8,200 self-employed individuals in the borough of Rochdale with over £20.5million being paid out up to 31 July 2020. This is up from 7,400 self-employed individuals and over £18million being paid out up to 31 May 2020.

Applications for a second and final SEISS grant of up to £6,750 opened earlier this month:
