Local independent singer-songwriter Ellysse Mason has released the video for her latest single 'Something Good' today, Friday 8 May.
Sitting firmly in the “Alt-Pop” category, the single is an a deftly-balanced mix of pop melodies and teasing glimpses of unusual production,an uplifting and hopeful song about the highs and lows of depression and anxiety.
Filmed over a 24-hour period, it shows the highs and lows of being shut off in our own homes - made all the more relevant by addressing the issues so many of us are facing during isolation.
Ellysse, 24, originally of Syke, Rochdale, said: “I wrote 'Something Good' around summer last year, about the search for those happier feelings even when you're feeling down.
“I found it difficult in isolation, just like everyone else. I like the outside and usually can’t stay in for longer than a day before I go mad. But it also forced this positive mindset onto me, because I’ve had to be. It’s like the world just stopped turning for a second, and it’s given me time to be creative. I managed to come up with a music video that can hopefully resonate with so many people.”
She continued: “Originally I had a pretty crazy idea for the video, which was based around flying saucers, outer space, crash landing on the moon, moon people, stop motion animation... the list of grand ideas goes on. Then the pandemic hit and I was stuck at home wondering what to do with unfinished plans.
“I saw a really sweet, short clip that Ariana Grande did for Vogue, so we thought we'd try and make something similar. The obvious thing to base it around was just being stuck in the house: bored, being happy, being sad, playing guitar, doing jigsaws and even flipping pancakes, which I did for the first time in the video – and actually nailed!
“My flatmate, who has a good eye, and I just captured all the stuff that everyone has been doing at home during the first couple of weeks of lockdown, when it all seemed completely alien.”
She added: “I'm really proud of what we achieved.”
‘Something Good’ is the lead single from Ellysse’s upcoming untitled album, which she plans to release next year.
“Because of lockdown, we've had to put most of these plans on hold but I'm really looking forward to getting back in the studio. I still haven't decided on a title; I think that will come together when all the tracks are together and finished in one place,” the former Falinge High School pupil said.
“The overall feel of the album is synthy-pop, outer spacey vibes with a mix of 80s and upbeat, road-trip feels. I was still finding my sound when I released 'Hunt Me Down' which was more ethereal, cinematic pop.
“I am really happy with that release, but I knew I wanted to go in a different direction. My new stuff is a lot more electronic and pop: I wanted to create something that would make people feel good and nostalgic, like a constant summer.
“The 80s set the tone for so much of what we listen to today. It was one of the best decades for music, everything was hopeful and it was the dawn of the feel-good era. It also seemed like a really innocent time and for me – whenever I’ve felt lost or down – the 80s inspired me to make music that not only moves people, but also uplifts and excites them.”
Ellysse, who moved to Manchester two years ago, won Rochdale’s Got Talent in 2010 when she was only 14-years-old, having written and performed her own original track, before performing at the Rochdale Feel Good Festival later that year.
She then recorded her first EP ‘I’ve Been Thinking’ in her bedroom, released in 2015.
Most recently, the self-released lead single on Ellysse’s last EP 'Hunt Me Down' reached 2.5 million streams on Spotify, leaping straight into number 10 on the platform’s New Music Friday playlist.
Ellysse has sold out headline shows at The Deaf Institute and Academy 3, in Manchester, recently supported Tom Walker on his UK tour and featured at Off The Record (Manchester), as well as multiple live performances on BBC Introducing Manchester, Soho Radio and other local North West radio stations.
She has also just been picked up by the international artist agency Paradigm and is now represented by Sol Parker.
