Rochdale Foodbank continues to supply people in need

Date published: 03 April 2020

Thanks to the efforts of a group of employees from Rochdale Council, Rochdale Foodbank is continuing to supply food parcels to residents in urgent need from its base on South Parade, during the currently reduced opening hours of 11.00am to 12noon each weekday.

As almost all the foodbank’s normal 100 volunteers are having to self-isolate at home, the council workers have taken over the key roles of food sorting and distribution.

Chair of the foodbank’s trustees, Martin Coupe said: “The number of clients needing help has not yet risen as much as we expected, though this may still happen in the future. We have reasonable stocks of most foods, though we are running extremely short of tinned meat and fish and will particularly welcome any donations of these. Donations can still be made at the staff entrance to Number One Riverside.

“Welcome financial donations are also continuing to be received and a number of other stores are becoming involved in supplying food. Just in the last 24 hours, foodbank volunteers have collected £600 worth of food from Morrisons store on Kingsway, including vital items such as tinned custard and rice pudding and pasta sauces, for which we and, of course, our clients are extremely grateful.”

Food parcels can also be obtained at Smallbridge Methodist Church on Saturday mornings from 10.30am until 12noon.

Financial donations can be made via the website at:
