Local psychologists host ACE awareness sessions at Hopwood Hall College

Date published: 15 March 2020

Clinical psychologists from local social enterprise Beyond Psychology held two sessions on adverse childhood experiences at Hopwood Hall College on Thursday 5 March.

Dr Kirsty Hughes and Dr Louise Mansell, who specialise in Attachment and Developmental Trauma, delivered the sessions to raise awareness about the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on individuals and the profound impact stress can have on people’s bodies and how they function.

Almost 200 people from Hacross the north west attended two four-hour-long sessions to learn about adverse childhood experiences and how to support young people.

Two young women from Rochdale and another member of staff from Beyond Psychology shared powerful stories of their experiences in care and what has helped them overcome adversity, whilst over 100 professionals signed a pledge to ensure they share the information gained.

Dr Louise Mansell said: “Seeing this in Rochdale was a dream come true for me and Kirsty [Hughes. We talked about how long we have been banging the drum for recognising the importance of understanding trauma on young people, and today we were joined by hundreds who are just as committed.

“Hopwood Hall becomes only the second college in the UK to be officially trauma informed with Beyond Psychology.”

After the event, a spokesperson for Hopwood Hall said: “The end of an amazing and inspiring day for us - to see so many people interested and committed to helping support and reduce the impact of trauma/ACEs.

“We hope it felt the same for everyone who attended.”
