Dementia awareness at the Centre of Wellbeing, Training and Culture

Date published: 06 March 2020

Scores of people attended the Centre of Wellbeing, Training and Culture’s annual celebration of dementia awareness at Unity House, Rochdale on Wednesday 26 February.

The event included services from Northern Care Alliance, Stroke Association, Select 4 Care, HMR Self Care Hub, Home Instead and Heritage Health Care and guest speakers included Mayor of Rochdale Councillor Billy Sheerin and Councillor Sameena Zaheer.

Several people took part in blood pressure and health checks with the services.

Light entertainment was provided by singer Kendra Faulkner, singer and keyboardist Arthur Gill, poet Naghmana Kanwel and Centre of Wellbeing, Training and Culture’s CEO, Mohammed Sarwar.

Certificates were presented by the Mayor and Councillor Zaheer to 14 people who gained a level two qualification in Understanding Dementia Awareness and Supporting Carers’ course.

The Mayor was very supportive of the organisation’s work in being able to create awareness of dementia and mental health, whilst Councillor Zaheer welcomed the fact that so many women attended. She encouraged them to take part in so many opportunities offered at the centre and highlighted the importance of this kind of work, adding that she would continue to support the organisation

Some of service users, who have been diagnosed with dementia or mental health issues, said they felt safe and welcome at the Centre of Wellbeing, Training and Culture and enjoyed learning there.

Mr Sarwar said: “We will continue to work with service users to create a better understanding of dementia and mental health and work with services to engage with the community.

“Thank you to everyone for their continuing support.”
