Repairing Whitworth Road
Repairs to Whitworth Road are well underway after a water main burst last weekend (29 February).
The road flooded between St Mary’s Gate and Haynes Street on Saturday, with repairs to the water main being completed in the early hours of Monday morning (2 March).
The road remains closed between St Mary’s Gate and Haynes Street whilst the road is filled back in.
A spokesperson for the council said: “As there is significant damage to Whitworth Road, the road is unlikely to reopen until next week.
“We’re on site every day dealing with the issue.”
Repairing the road revealed some of Rochdale’s hidden history, as 100-year-old tram tracks were uncovered during the repair work.
It is thought the tram line ran from Rochdale through to Bacup, operated by the Bury, Rochdale and Oldham Steam Tramways Company Limited.
The tram services ran until the 1930s.
