Smile for Rooley Moor Road's new speed sign

Date published: 04 March 2020

A new radar speed sign has been installed on Rooley Moor Road to raise awareness for drivers. The speed sign not only displays the speed of passing vehicles, but if you’re keeping to the speed limit, you’ll get a smiley face.

Local residents and ward councillors have been campaigning for years for measures to curb speeding traffic along this road. On a steep hill like this, it’s easy for speed to creep over 30mph without noticing. It’s hoped that this new sign will shock those normally careful drivers into paying more attention to their speed.

Spotland and Falinge Councillor Faisal Rana said: “Rooley Moor Road is a main road, but it’s quite narrow in parts and has a number of bends. It’s quite a dangerous road because too many motorists ignore the speed limit. It’s quite a fun sign with a very serious message which hopefully will cut down on speeding traffic.”

Fellow ward councillor Rachel Massey added: “There are a small minority of drivers that use our roads as a racetrack. They need to be aware that travelling just 3mph over the speed limit can mean the difference between life or death for someone in their path. I’m pleased to see this sign is now installed.”

The camera was funded by Rochdale Council's township fund.
