Trio tackled and fined for fly-tipping offences

Three more residents have been fined in connection with waste dumped illegally following council investigations.

They were ordered to pay costs for offences contrary to the Environmental Protection Act (1990) at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 11 February.

Janet McGivern, 45, of Heywood, pleaded guilty to breaching her duty of care on the transfer of her household waste. She told the court she paid an unnamed man in a van to remove four bags of waste for her. The bags were subsequently found fly-tipped at Chamber House Farm in Rochdale. She was fined £200 and ordered to pay costs of £375 and a victim surcharge of £30.

 

 

Shauni Nield, 26, of Rochdale, and Natalie Cooper, 32, of Heywood, were found guilty in their absence of the offence of littering. Both had attended for an interview following waste being found fly-tipped and had admitted depositing some of the fly-tipped waste. They were offered and accepted Fixed Penalty Notices but failed to pay them.

Shauni Nield was ordered to pay a total of £416 in fines and costs; Natalie Cooper was ordered to pay a total of £421.

The council has already secured seven convictions for environmental crimes this year with another eighteen cases listed for hearing before the end of April - demonstrating a further crackdown on these types of offences.

 

 

Councillor Neil Emmott, the council’s cabinet member for environment, said: “The increasing number of prosecutions are encouraging on the council’s part but it does not excuse those who still engage in this criminal activity who create an eyesore on our local streets and rural areas. 

“We continually encourage people who have waste removed to check for the appropriate waste carrier’s licence, a responsibility which must be taken by everyone.”
