Audiologists urge people to correctly manage tinnitus this Tinnitus Awareness Week

Date published: 02 February 2020

Local audiologists are urging people to receive correct advice to help manage tinnitus this British Tinnitus Association Awareness Week (3-9 February).

Tinnitus is the perception of noises in the head and/or ear which have no external source. Those living with the condition may have to endure a ringing, buzzing, hissing, whistling or other noise. The sensation can be constant or intermittent and it can vary in volume.

Tinnitus is very common, with one in three people experiencing tinnitus at some point in their lives this includes adults and children. In the UK, the number of people who live with persistent tinnitus is approximately 13%.

Helen Connaughton, an advanced senior audiologist at Nye Bevan House in Rochdale, said: “It is important that you receive the correct advice on the management strategies that are right for you.

“Heywood, Middleton & Rochdale Audiology service have specialist tinnitus clinics. Once you have been referred into a tinnitus clinic, you will be seen by an audiologist who specialises in tinnitus.

“The audiologist will work with you to look at different approaches to help you manage your tinnitus more effectively."

If you suspect you have tinnitus, you should talk to your GP.
