Primary school league tables

Date published: 06 December 2007

League tables published today (Thursday 6 December) show  progress for Rochdale primary schools. The results of Key Stage 2 tests taken by 11 year olds in the borough in May show that the percentage of pupils achieving Level 4 and above rose by one percentage point to 77% in maths, remained at 79% in English and fell slightly to 85% in science.

Furrow Community School in Middleton was named the most improved school. Headteacher Chris Windle said she was "thrilled" with the results. "I can't begin to tell you how pleased I am for the children and the staff who have worked so hard," she said.

Ms Windle said the "high expectations" the school has of both teachers and children had helped turn results around. "We are all passionate about giving children a chance in life," she said.

At St Michael's CE Primary School, Bamford every child who sat the exams reached the expected government standard in all three core subjects.

Cabinet Member for Children, Schools and Families, Councillor Irene Davidson said: "These results show that the Council remains on track with its ambition to ensure all children in the borough get the best education, have a better future and are given every chance to excel. The improvements are a splendid achievement by pupils and a fine tribute to the hard work and determination of teachers, support staff and parents."

Executive Director Terry Piggott said: "These results show that the significant improvement in pupils' achievements at Key Stage 2 has now been sustained over a number of years. Results have improved dramatically as the Council's substantial investment in primary schools allied to the dedication and effort of school staff, parents and pupils has enabled children from some of the most deprived areas of the country to exceed educational expectations.

"We know though that there is still a lot to do but we are confident that our focus on increasing educational achievement will continue to bring success."

Guide to the primary school tables
The tables show the published results achieved by schools in the Key Stage 2 national curriculum tests in England in May 2007.

Those are the tests pupils are required to sit in the final year of primary school, at the age of 10 or 11.

The tables use the results published by the Department for Children, Schools and Families.

They include "contextual value added" scores - produced by the department to show how much a school has improved its pupils' achievements since they took their first set of assessments in 2004.

The figures relate to all local authority-maintained primary and middle schools with pupils eligible for assessment at the time of the tests in English, maths and science in May.

They do not include special schools, pupil referral units, hospital schools or independent schools.

The schools are scored on the "contextual value added" score, and on the combined or "aggregate" score achieved in the three tests - the maximum possible being 300.
