Support group launched for female survivors of sexual abuse

Date published: 02 October 2019

A support group for female survivors of sexual assault has been launched by a survivor from Littleborough.

The group, entitled ‘The Phoenix’ has been started by Deborah, who has bravely waived her right to anonymity and does not wish to share her full name.

According to the Safeline charity, one in four women are survivors of rape or sexual abuse.

Deborah said: “My reason for starting this group is personal experience of such an ordeal. I understand the loneliness and isolation, and I hope this support group can benefit other female survivors in the Rochdale area.

“The Phoenix’s sole aim is to empower all female survivors of sexual assault or rape and to reinforce survivors’ capabilities to take back their own power, identity and reinforce their own strength as survivors of the devastating consequences and life-challenging experience in the aftermath of rape and sexual abuse.

“The group is to bring together survivors who understand each other’s pains, challenges, barriers, and who have the ability to support each other during the recovery process. You are not alone.

“Together we will support, build each other up, heal and move forward and enjoy life once again.”
