Rochdale veteran recognised at 2019 English Veterans Awards

Date published: 02 October 2019

A Rochdale veteran has won an award at this year’s prestigious English Veterans Awards.

Terry Morley was presented the Community Award at the annual ceremony on Wednesday 25 September 2019 at the Mercure Bristol Holland House.

Announced as a finalist in August this year, Terry is a former Veterans In Communities Transformational Coach who served eight years with The 1st Battalion Kings Regiment. He began working at Groundwork in Greater Manchester in 2017 as the Veterans Employment Programme Manager.

Groundwork, a not-for-profit organisation, improves people's prospects and develops employment initiatives that support care leavers, people with a criminal record and now, military veterans with the help of Terry.

Terry said: “Firstly to be nominated, then being shortlisted, and then winning it was a huge shock and honour, especially when I was up against some excellent nominees from across England.

“This award is for Groundwork in Greater Manchester, Operation Re-Org and all the Armed Forces and Veteran Support Organisations and Veterans I work with; without them this wouldn’t have been possible.”

In England, there are tens of thousands of former military personnel who upon retirement from the armed forces have gone on to contribute immensely to their country. The English Veterans Awards looks to celebrate these heroes.

The Awards were held to reward former serving military personnel in the areas of sport, fitness, business, their contribution to wider community and those companies that go above and beyond to recruit from the veteran community.

Winners at this year’s awards included:

Samuel T Reddy - Role Model
Terry Morley - Community
Cain Leathem - Fitness
Dave Beresford - Lifetime
Tim Evers BCA - Volunteer
Mr Terry Brazier - Sport Award

The 2019 Awards were sponsored by Barratt Developments and held in support of ABF The Soldiers’ Charity and the Welsh Guards Charity.

During the night, £2,000 was raised for ABF The Soldiers' Charity, means that a fantastic £4,000 has been raised in total for the charity this year, as well as £470 for the Welsh Guards Charity.
