Rochdale Borough Council is set to receive £38,000 from the government to help ease pressures on local services resulting from recent migration.

The funding has been allocated to the Building Bridges project, which aims to build cohesion amongst young people from different backgrounds and to ensure new arrivals and emerging communities are brought into, and are able to access, the economic and civic life of Rochdale.

The proposal suggests the use of data innovations to find the areas where new migrants are settling and ‘parallel lives’ are being led. This will be the foundation for targeted and tailored interventions.

The latest nationwide funding of £28 million, announced by Communities Minister Lord Bourne, will be allocated to 123 projects across the country, bringing the total funding from the government’s Controlling Migration Fund to over £100 million.

The Controlling Migration Fund was first announced in November 2016 and is designed to support local areas facing pressures linked to recent immigration.

The fund has helped deliver results for communities across England, from tackling rogue landlords to helping alleviate rough sleeping, and boosting community integration through English language lessons.

Communities Minister Lord Bourne said: “Each community is unique in the challenges it faces, but the projects we’ve funded have shown that positive change is possible when people come together and think innovatively about how to support the whole community.”
