Whitworth Amateur Musical and Dramatic Society (WAMDS) is celebrating success for their production of Avenue Q after winning an award at the Manchester Musical Awards on Saturday (15 June 2019).

Steven Cheeseman was awarded ‘Best Comedy Performance’ for his role in ‘Avenue Q’, which was shown at Rochdale’s Curtain Theatre in October 2018.

Avenue Q is an award-winning musical comedy featuring puppets and human actors with adult themes and topics in a Sesame Street-esque world.

Megan Wight, who performed the lead female role as Kate Monster, was also nominated for 'Best Actress' at the awards.

WAMDS production of Avenue Q was nominated overall for ‘Technical Achievement for Sound’.

Founded in 1963, WAMDS was set up to provide amateur theatre activities in Whitworth. In its subsequent 53 years, this is the first time one of its shows has been recognised at the Manchester Musical Awards.

Andy Kelly, chair of WAMDS, said: “It’s fantastic that this show was nominated in three categories as this was the first year WAMDS has been part of the Manchester Musical Awards.

“The society isn’t the biggest in the region by far, but we’re really proud of our track record in nurturing local talent and producing such a wide variety of musicals.”

The group are staging Spring Awakening this July and the evergreen Guys and Dolls in October.

Tickets for the productions are available online:
