Inspiring mental health support worker in the running for award

A mental health support worker who pioneered innovative new services to support local residents has been nominated for a regional award.

Sarah Schofield has been shortlisted in the health and social care category at the acclaimed Inspire Awards, which take place at Bolton’s Macron Stadium on Saturday 22 June. 

The awards evening celebrates the achievements of inspirational women from the north west who have led the way across business, social work and the voluntary sector. 

Sarah, who works for Rochdale Borough Council and is based at the Sudden Mental Health Resource Centre, has been instrumental in developing and implementing a range of new projects across the borough. 

One of her major achievements was to deliver a free support service for residents who need help, advice and information about the benefits and welfare system. 

Other key facets of Sarah’s role includes providing support to people with mental health issues, signposting them to employment and training opportunities and working with partner organisations to ensure residents are accessing relevant services. 

Sarah said: “I am honoured to have been nominated for this award by my colleagues. It means so much to me. I don’t see myself as anything special, I just come to work to try and make a positive difference to people’s lives. Every day I give 100 per cent effort and commitment to my role. The area of work I am most proud about is helping to establish a voluntary service, where people can receive support and advice about the welfare system. I am looking forward to the evening and would like to thank my wonderful colleagues for nominating me.” 

Councillor Iftikhar Ahmed, cabinet member for adult services, said: “Sarah is a star whose dedicated, committed and tireless work for the council shines brightly. She regularly goes the extra mile to deliver services that are improving the lives of our residents. It’s fantastic that her work has been recognised and it’s fitting that the ceremony is called the Inspire Awards as Sarah is an inspiration to both colleagues and service users.
