Sajid Javid’s brother becomes a commander at London Metropolitan Police

Date published: 04 June 2019

Basit Javid, brother of MP Sajid Javid, will become a commander at London Metropolitan Police.

Rochdale-born Basit, a chief superintendent of West Midlands Police, will now be in charge of frontline policing at the Metropolitan Police Service.

In a social media statement on 1 June, Mr Javid said: “After 12 years with West Midlands Police, I’ll be sad to say goodbye next week.

“It’s been an absolute honour and privilege to serve with so many fantastic colleagues, partners and community friends. I’ll be sad to go, but also looking forward to another exciting chapter with the Metropolitan Police.”

Basit joined West Midlands Police in 2007 as a detective chief inspector after 13 years serving with Avon & Somerset Police.

He was previously with the Royal Navy and is a veteran of the Gulf War.

Brothers Basit and Sajid were born in Rochdale after their bus driver father, Abdul, came to the UK from Pakistan in 1961, reportedly with just £1 in his pocket.

He settled in Rochdale, where Sajid, Basit and their three brothers – Atif, Khalid and Tariq – were born, before the family moved to Bristol.
