Waithlands Road goes green

Date published: 03 June 2019

Ten new trees now brighten up the street environment of Waithlands Road thanks to the Green Team, a joint scheme organised by RBH and Groundwork.

The eco-friendly improvements feature specially chosen trees that are well suited to the street scene with narrow stems and high canopies, which are not likely to grow into something huge and imposing. They are also very mature specimens and come with high quality guard grilles.

RBH Environment Manager Paul Dockerty said: “The tree planting project was undertaken in order to provide much-needed greenery to the area. It was implemented through the RBH Green Team. This is an apprenticeship scheme operated in partnership with Groundwork and made up of residents of RBH neighbourhoods.”

Planting trees does wonderful things for the environment and for people living near them. Besides taking carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and replacing it with oxygen, just a few trees can reduce stress and anxiety and help absorb noises from the street. In short; they make an area a better place to live.

The tree planting scheme is supported by the local ward councillors.

Councillor Shakil Ahmed said: “I am proud to have been part of this project to bring more greenery on to the streets of Rochdale. Both the Council and RBH and Groundwork’s Green Team efforts have brought about real, positive improvement.”
