Five-year-old Ella Lockwood from Heywood has raised hundreds of pounds for Springhill Hospice after a seven-mile charity walk on Sunday (28 April).
The little girl, of Omrod Road, decided to tackle Springhill Hospice’s circular Hospice to Hospice walk in memory of her beloved ‘great nanny’, Carol Perkins, whom Ella had a special bond with.
Ella, a pupil at Hopwood Community Primary School, was Carol’s first great-grandchild and, although she lived in the Midlands with Ella’s great-grandpa, Peter, Ella would visit regularly and phone her constantly to tell her about her day.
Carol, 80, was supported by Compton Hospice, near Wolverhampton, attending weekly support groups and it was there where she died with her family by her side, after a 12-month battle with pancreatic cancer.
Ella, who lives with her mum Jess, dad Martin and little brother Oliver, three, visited her at the hospice and has fond memories of writing about her and sitting with her showing her drawings.
Having decided to take part in the walk from Springhill Hospice on Broad Lane to Dr Kershaw’s Hospice in Oldham and back, Ella has reached her target and raised just over £900 for the charity.
Ella's dad, Martin, an emergency medical technician for the North West Ambulance Service, said: “Ella is very pleased. She had very achy legs, but knowing what she did made it all worth it.”
Rebekah Cheshire, Springhill's Events and Campaigns Fundraiser, said: “What a fabulous achievement! Ella has done an outstanding job of raising awareness for Springhill Hospice and more importantly donating a fantastic amount of funds towards our patient care, in memory of her great grandmother.
“From all at Springhill, we would like to say a massive congratulations and a big thank you to you Ella.
“Well done!”
