Heywood Scout and Guide Associations gathered on Sunday (28 April) for their annual St George’s Parade.
The parade started from Harwood Park School led by Cadishead Community Public Brass Band along Hornby Street, King Street, Mount Street, Manchester Street, Church Street, Hartley Street and onto York Street to St Luke's Church.
The children renewed their promises in a service at St Luke's before parading back from the church along York Street, Hartley Street and onto L/Cpl Stephen Shaw MC Way where the groups paraded past the Cenotaph for the salute.
Groups taking part in the parade included:
- 12th Heywood (Our Lady & St Joseph’s)
- 7th Heywood (St George's)
- 1st Heywood (St John’s)
- 3rd/4th Heywood (Ravenscroft)
- 8th Heywood (St Luke’s)
- 9th Heywood (St Michael’s)
- 9th Heywood (St Margaret’s)
- 2nd Heywood (St Luke’s)
- 4th Heywood (St Luke's)
- Heywood Rangers
- Trefoil Guild
- 14th Heywood (Woodland’s) Guides
Baden-Powell, who started the Scouting movement, chose Saint George to be the patron Saint of Scouting. He felt that the Saint George legend set a good example of faith, courage and perseverance for future generations.
