HMR Circle continues to expand its services

Date published: 16 April 2019

Circle is a membership organisation open to anyone over 50, supporting individuals and communities to lead their lives the way they want.

Lunch Club

After the unfortunate closure of the Meadowfields Community Centre, Tracey Coatman at Meadowfields approached HMR Circle to see if they could help keep their well long-standing lunch club going.

Working with Tracey and the volunteers at the lunch club a new venue was found at St Ann's Church Hall at Belfield.

The lunch club moved to St Ann's 3 weeks ago and HMR Circle have been helping to minimise the disruption to the lunch club attendees and volunteers, although due to availability the day had to be changed.

Mark Wynn Director at HMR Circle said: “We are sad to see the closure of Meadowfields Community Centre but we are working hard with the staff and volunteers to ensure the lunch club not only survives but thrives in this new venue.'

“The long term plan is to help the lunch club become a self-managing with its own committee and structure.

“To help achieve this we need more volunteers to help with tasks on the day and/or with helping with the committee.

“We are also looking to link other social eating activities together to create a Lunch Club-Club.”

Please email mark@hmrcircle.org.uk or phone 01706 751165 to get involved.

Social Eating programme

One of Circle's latest initiatives around Social Eating is the BAME Men’s Lunch Club, based at Falinge Mews. The BAME Men’s group is a collaboration between HMR Circle, RBH and Rochdale Mind, working on an Ambition for Ageing scaled programme.

The Social Eating programme is part of a wider partnership with RBH, Southway Housing, Bolton at Home, Groundwork, TLC, Cracking Good Food and Food Sync.

After the success of our BAME Men’s Lunch Club Circle's Special Project Coordinator, Kim Wah Ho is working with Uzma Firdos at Rochdale Mind to launch a Dementia Day Service for BAME older people.

They are currently in a test phase with a small cohort of older people to ensure an exemplar service is delivered for the people who will access the day service.

Visitors from abroad

After the visits at the end of 2018 from South Korea, three separate research groups from Korea have contacted HMR Circle to ask to visit the UK.

The next group will be flying in on the 23 July 2019 to come and see first-hand the work of HMR Circle.

HMR Circle Volunteer Drivers Service

Volunteer Drivers Service

The HMR Circle Volunteer Drivers Service has gone on from strength to strength, with more members and more trips than ever before. For the first time ever one of the volunteer drivers has clocked up over 10,000 miles driving for the service.

To help cope with demand and to ensure the best possible service to our members we are looking to recruit new drivers.

Can you help or do you know someone who can? Call the Volunteer Driver Service on 0800 032 0868 or email mary@hmrcircle.org.uk
