Bamford litter pick clears over 200 glass bottles and 25 bags of rubbish

Date published: 08 April 2019

Over 200 glass bottles were cleared during a litter pick on greenbelt land in Bamford on Saturday 6 April.

The Friends of Bamford community group co-ordinated the litter pick between members, Fieldhouse Cricket Club, Bridge Juniors Football Club, the three ward councillors and residents, which also saw 25 bags of rubbish collected.

The bottles had been dumped together in the undergrowth in several different places, and have now gone for recycling.

A spokesman for Friends of Bamford said: "The wine bottles are a mystery. They've not been fly-tipped; they mysteriously appear one by one and accumulate gradually, with new ones appearing almost daily.

“We knew there were a few, but only since the undergrowth has been trimmed back did we realise just how many there are. They surely can't all have been left by teenagers, drinking where they think no-one can see them? Have we got a secret drinker, in a car or on foot, hiding the evidence in the undergrowth? If anyone knows who is responsible, both we and the council would like to hear from you.”

They continued: “Whatever the explanation, this irresponsible behaviour is making people really angry. Not only are they an eyesore, but glass left lying about is dangerous: the area is used extensively by the general public, especially children playing football, and dog walkers.

“The council has agreed to provide an extra litter bin at the field end of Hollin Lane, which is where the biggest pile of bottles was, so let’s hope whoever is responsible will use it."
