Reuse Littleborough becomes first public crisp packet recycling drop-off point in the borough

Date published: 05 April 2019

Reuse Littleborough has become the first public drop-off point in the Rochdale borough to accept crisp packets for recycling.

Reuse Littleborough’s premises on Church Street is so far the only public drop-off point in the borough, and allows the community group to raise funds for the Forever Angels Baby Home in Tanzania.

The UK’s first nationwide recycling scheme for all brands of crisp packets was launched in 2018 by Walkers in partnership with the recycling company TerraCycle.

All crisp packets will be accepted, provided they are laid flat and not folded into triangles or tied. Once collected, they will be cleaned, shredded and turned into small plastic pellets which will then be converted into useful plastic items, such as benches and fence posts.

Collectors can earn points which can be redeemed for a payment to a non-profit organisation of their choice.

Based at the former Royal Oak Hotel, Reuse Littleborough is a community group keeping unwanted items out of landfill. Items can be donated to those in need, whilst others are sold through their shop, generating profits to be poured into helping people in need.

Since its inception, the group has changed the lives of many people both locally and internationally.

Forever Angels, which has cared for hundreds of babies, was set up by Amy Hathaway, after she found four dying babies in a hospital closet. She was told they were dying of AIDS, but actually, they were dying from starvation and neglect.

The baby home in Tanzania has been supported by Reuse Littleborough a number of times over the last few years.
