Volunteers clean Heywood riverside of litter

Date published: 03 April 2019

A group of volunteers spent part of their afternoon clearing litter from Queen’s Park in Heywood on Saturday (30 March).

Nine volunteers from Heywood joined forces to clear litter from a 100 metre stretch of riverside near the Penny Bridge area in the park.

14 bags of rubbish were collected, mostly consisting of plastic waste and sanitary products.

One volunteer, Gwenda Eckersley said: “The floods brought in a lot of rubbish into the surrounding area. We hate rubbish and what it does to the places where we love to walk our dogs, relax, run or fish. I have lived in Heywood for 35 years and I love it.

“Unfortunately, there is a lot of rubbish. Some areas are particularly bad with discarded bottles, food wrappers. I love Queen's Park. It is a lovely park. People feel very safe there. It seems only a little thing to do, volunteering to pick up a bit of rubbish.”

The group is planning another litter pick in the same area on Saturday 6 April between 2 and 4pm.
