Consultation to improve housing association-tenant relationship

Date published: 03 April 2019

Residents are being encouraged to become involved with a consultation to strengthen the relationship between housing associations and their tenants and residents.

Rochdale Boroughwide Housing (RBH) has pledged support for the project as one of over 90 housing associations across the country which will be early adopters of the plan, once feedback from the consultation has been received.

Organised by the National Housing Federation (NHF), Together with Tenants plan has been designed to deliver change across the sector.

The Federation, which represents housing associations across England, has been working with tenants, residents, tenant representative groups, housing associations and others to understand what practical change is needed.

Gareth Swarbrick, RBH Chief Executive, said: “We’re proud and excited to pledge to be an early adopter of the ‘Together with Tenants’ plan, and we hope that as many residents as possible will respond to the consultation with their views.”

The plan suggests four key points:

  • A new requirement in Code of Governance for boards to be accountable to their tenants and residents.
  • A new charter setting out what tenants and residents can expect from their housing association landlord.
  • Tenant and resident oversight and scrutiny of the charter with a report on how their landlord is doing against charter commitments.
  • A closer link with regulation.
