Race to be named after Pride of Britain winner Ella Chadwick

Date published: 01 April 2019

Whitworth’s Pride of Britain winner Ella Chadwick is set to have her very own race named after her.

Hosted by Andems Runners, the Ella Chadwick Mile will take place at 6.30pm on Wednesday 10 April, with proceeds going to the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

Ella was born with a rare kidney disease, Congenital Nephrotic Syndrome, surviving over 40 gruelling operations in her first six years before having a lifesaving kidney donated from her grandmother.

She was forced to have both of her kidneys removed and, up until her life-saving transplant, she faced weekly hospital trips for dialysis at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

Even after her tough start in life, Ella has never let that stop her, pouring all of her determined efforts into supporting the charity and raising funds to help other sick children.

In October 2018, the little girl was recognised with the Child of Courage Award at the Pride of Britain awards ceremony.

The Ella Chadwick Mile will be followed by the Mollie Campbell 5k, in honour of Mollie Campbell, also from Whitworth, who was part of the basketball squad that won a silver medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.

Race organiser, Andy O’Sullivan MBE, of Andems Runners, said: “Mollie Campbell and Ella Chadwick are both Whitworth girls, and they have done so much to make the people of Whitworth proud of them.

“Mollie won silver at the Commonwealth and Ella is an inspiration to our nation, so it would be fitting to have hundreds of locals take part in the 5k and the mile.”
