James Grime from The Enigma Project
The Enigma Project visited Matthew Moss High School to demonstrate a real enigma machine which was used during World War Two on Wednesday 27 March.
James Grime demonstrated the incredible machine, of which there are only about 300 left in the world, and also hosted workshops during the day to all Year 7s who took part in code breaking tasks.
James talked about the fascinating history and mathematics of codes and code breaking, from ancient Greece to the present day, including a demonstration of an original WWII Enigma Machine.
Cryptography is one of the most interesting, inspiring and exotic applications of mathematics.
A spokesperson for the school said: “The visit formed part of our CHANGE classes with a focus on mathematics and cryptography.
“These machines are very rare, and we are fortunate to have had one demonstrated to our students.
“Thank you to James for an amazing presentation and for sharing his expertise about the history of the Enigma Machine.”
